Over the years working on the ocean of information, I have discovered many secrets to e-business success. One of those secrets is obtaining inbound links through a link building program. Essentially, top ranks = Quality Inbound Links. When it comes to the subject of link building, most people think that it is just a matter of exchanging links with other sites.

One night in 2003, I was pouring over the Google guidelines and feverishly trying to figure out this concept of “inbound links”. Back then it was a novel concept but now most people realize the importance. In order to get top ranks, you will need to start developing your inbound link partners (votes for your site). But not just any inbound link partners, you need quality inbound link partners (after all a vote from President Obama’s web site would be much more powerful than a vote from your 12 year old brother’s Angelfire site.)

Inbound links come in two flavors; Reciprocal links and One Way links. Reciprocal links are very important indeed, but limited in terms of SEO results. They are just part of the overall strategy of a link building effort. In fact, if a website features more than a certain amount of links (generally 50-75), search engines might view that particular website as trying to fake a strong link popularity rating. This is why one-way-links weigh so much more in terms of SEO.

One-way-links involve manual submission to directories, submission of articles, press releases, and building a trusted presence on blogs and forums in your industry. None of the aforementioned actions can be implemented with software. They are all based on manual labor — and anyone who tells you otherwise might not be practicing ethical internet marketing. From ground up, it generally takes at least one qualified person full time for several months to develop satisfactory results. Larger fortune 500 companies hire full-time technicians just to go speak about their websites on blogs and forums. In the offline world this might be the same as hiring a celebrity to endorse your products.

Basically, Google Technology has developed the link popularity factor in order to define who is a “real player” on the internet. In other words, think of the offline world and your rolodex. Well, if website A has 100 inbound links, and website B no inbound links, it’s quite easy to make the connection that the site with the higher link count will rank better. There is a caveat here though. Let’s say both sites had 100 links, but one had “quality links, while the other had low quality spam links, again, clear to see which is more likely to get top ranks.

To get these inbound links, you are having to sit down at the computer all day and surf all over the web looking for places to link to, and emailing potential link partners. While not hard work, it’s definitely tedious, and time consuming.

2. ) Directory Links (one-way-links)

In the ocean of information, the internet, there are many locations where you can post a link pointing back to your web site. There are literally 1000’s of directories that will accept your link. In most cases, site marketers boycott such ‘secondary directories’ thinking that little or no traffic would result from being listed on them…We agree! In most cases, you shouldn’t expect to get mega traffic from such articles after they get published… In fact, possibilities are that your articles & press releases will never be found nor read, but their purpose is once again to boost your link popularity thru one-way-links. Article Marketing & Press Releases are an easy and efficient way to extend backlinks to your site.

4.) Blogs & Forums (one way links)

Some internet marketers argue that the best links you can get, are ‘contextual links’. Contextual refers to relevancy and context. The idea is that Google ranks sites based on relevancy. If your inbound links are on relevant pages to your topic, Google likes this. If you have spam links across hundreds of non-relevant web pages, Google is likely to see this as a manipulation tactic. Where possible, participate in blogs and forums that are related to your industry. Post comments & questions and always include your URL listed in your signature. The name of the game is to have interaction with online communities through blogs and forums to have a legitimate reason to list your URL as many times as possible, thus skyrocketing your link popularity through one-way-links. Link enhancement through Blogs & Forums is also a labor intense process which cannot be implemented through software. To post a comment, a human must read the blog, and make an insightful, helpful response. There is an art to navigate’ through blogs & forums, but it is definitely worth the time invested since Google loves contextual one-way-links!

5.) Social Media (one way links)

If you haven’t heard the term Social Media lately, you might be living in a cave. Wikipedia defines it as follows: “Social media supports the human need for social interaction with technology, transforming broadcast media monologues (one to many) into social media dialogues (many to many). It supports the democratization of knowledge and information, transforming people from content consumers into content producers.” Think social media when you think of sites like facebook, linkedin, myspace, twitter, etc, these are places where people are interacting online. Links are often generated from social media activities, although it is primarily used best as a branding or networking medium. One of the biggest growth areas in internet marketing at the moment is link building through social media.

    Thanks for explaining the importance of link building and the differences between types of links. I can see now the effort it takes to build links and reputation. Websites now are so much more than just static brochures. To be successful, they need to be living, breathing, changing entities.
